Legislation has been introduced in the New York State Legislature that would allow doctors to legally prescribe a lethal dose of pills at the request of a terminally ill patient. While proponents call these bills “death with dignity” and “patient selfdetermination,” in reality they are unnecessary, flawed and dangerous.  Legalizing assisted suicide would endanger elderly, disabled, and vulnerable people. It will send the message to others that suicide is acceptable and lead to an increase in suicides. It will leave people with depression and other mental illnesses untreated.
